Reverend Ray Owens began his ministry at First Christian Church in July of 2002. He is married to Laurie, who teaches special education at Club Hill Elementary School in Garland. Ray and Laurie have two grown daughters.

Prior to moving to Garland, Ray was the pastor of the First Christian Church in Marshall, Texas. He has also served Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations in Plano, Weatherford, and Hereford, Texas. Ray is a native of Harlingen, Texas and a 1967 graduate of Galena Park Senior High School in Galena Park, Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas Tech University, a Master of Church Music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity degree from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Ray began his ministry as a licensed minister in 1977. He was ordained in 1988 following his graduation from Brite Divinity School.

Teaching and performing music has been an important part of Ray's life. Prior to entering the ministry he taught public school music for three years in Seguin, Texas. Later, Ray served as the Minister of Music and Youth at First Christian Church in Hereford. While attending Brite Divinity School, he directed the seminary's Chapel Choir. Ray continues to utilize his musical training at First Christian Church by singing solos for weddings and funerals, singing in the Chancel Choir, singing in a men’s quartet, teaching guitar lessons and promoting music activities for children and youth.

At First Christian Church, Garland, the Senior Minister and Associate Minister work closely together to meet the many pastoral concerns of the congregation. Ray also gives pastoral over-sight to the following ministries: Christian Education, Membership/Caring Groups, and Fellowship.

Garland ChurchYouth Minister
Rebeccah Anderson
r.s.anderson@tcu.edu

My name is Rebeccah Anderson and I have had the privilege of serving and being taught by the youth and children of First Christian Church in Garland, Texas since the fall of 2005. It is a blessing to tell you that I am a wife to my God-fearing husband, Andrew Anderson, who also serves as a Youth Pastor at a neighboring Disciples congregation. We live in Fort Worth where I am finishing my Masters of Divinity degree at Brite Divinity School. I traveled here to Texas from the beautiful mid-west state of Illinois, where I grew up. I received my undergraduate degree at Eureka College with a major concentration in psychology.

What you need to know about me? I am in love with Jesus Christ and my passion is to serve God and His people. I constantly struggle with scripture, prayer, being slow to speak and quick to listen, and one of my biggest struggles is taking the moments to be ‘quiet’ in our ‘loud’ world!

One of my biggest pet peeves is superficiality! I am a real person, with real struggles and nothing encourages me more than to hear the ‘real’ struggles of others (especially young people who have to fight so many battles with the world)!

I believe in Jesus’ words when he said, “In order to gain your life, you must lose it.” I believe in the power of prayer and in living dangerously for Christ! I believe that God’s church was intended for love, fellowship, prayer, and service; and that the only business that belongs in the church is the business of loving people!

It is an honor to share (a small portion of) my story with you and I am blessed at the thought of hearing yours! Please feel free to contact me in the most convenient way for you. I am in my office on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday during each week and I would love for you to come visit! Please browse through the rest of this youth page and pray about how you could join us in our revolution to become extremists for Love!

About The Christian Church

Disciples of Christ

Disciples congregations celebrate the Lord's Supper every Sunday. The table is open. That means that all Christians are invited to respond to Christ's invitation to draw closer to Him around the communion table. For Disciples, the open table is a powerful symbol of our deep commitment to Christian unity. The open table honors diversity even as it celebrates unity in Christ. All are welcome.

Come to the welcome table!

We believe that God is calling the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice. This is our vision.
